GILBERT, Ariz. (November 17, 2017) — Sporting AZ FC announced today that it has submitted applications to field teams in the Women's United Premier Soccer League and the National Premier Soccer League in 2018.
"We re-launched our club this year with the intention of giving local athletes a place to continue their soccer development," said Sporting President Tim Marchisotto. "We had an excellent first season in the UPSL, and adding teams to compete in the WUPSL and the NPSL is a logical next step in extending our vision to even more players."
Sporting will continue to field a team in the UPSL. The current squad took a 3-1 win over UPSL rivals Inter Empireworks FC last month in U.S. Open Cup Qualifying, and play Galati FC tomorrow at Chandler-Gilbert Community College for the right to compete in next year's tournament.
Sporting AZ FC, then known as the Arizona Sahuaros, were crowned champions of the NPSL (then MPSL) in 2003, the league's inaugural season.
The club is currently exploring venue options in Chandler and Gilbert for 2018, and plans to design a unique, intimate seating environment for fans.
