Continuing its high-profile preseason schedule after last week’s meeting with Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer, Sporting AZ FC faced Colorado Rapids (MLS) today for a 120-minute scrimmage at Kino North Stadium.
Sporting came out with a strong starting XI, including MLS Cup winner and team captain Andrew Weber, and Costa Rica international Alejandro Aguilar. Weber would finish the day with 7 saves. Aguilar managed to find the back of the net in the first half, but was judged offside.
Other standout performers for Sporting included Kenny McAvoy and newcomer Ismael Santana, whose skillful runs into the box gave U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper Tim Howard and his Colorado backline plenty of nervy moments.
For the Rapids, it was the third tune-up of the preseason, and new head coach Anthony Hudson got a good look at new attacking options Johan Blomberg and Arizona native Niki Jackson, each of whom netted a brace.
After two 45-minute halves and an additional 30 minutes, the result was 9-0 in favor of Colorado.
