Sporting AZ FC continued its winning ways, logging a 4-0 victory over Southwest FC at Highland High School Saturday night. Ismael Santana recorded a hat trick for the hosts.
Coach Aidan Davison’s men have not conceded a single league goal this season, with one match to play. But it was the offense that took center stage on the evening, and in particular, a recharged Santana.
The veteran striker from Mexico got the scoring started in the 15th minute off the David Paul assist, then added an exclamation point with a barn-burning screamer from 19 yards off the long pass from Danny Arrubla. Just minutes later, in the 29th, Santana’s shot was saved by the Southwest FC goalkeeper, but Arrubla was there to grab the rebound and slot home from short range.
Santana added his third in the 86th minute, this time on the ball from Roberto DeLima.
Southwest did not back down. Sporting goalkeeper Andrew Weber was forced into a 1-v-1 situation in the 50th minute and came up with a save. Just before halftime, the center referee awarded a penalty to the visitors before reversing the decision a moment later, saving Weber from facing the spot kick.
Sporting AZ FC faces MSC United on Saturday, June 30 at Highland High School, in the regular season finale. The club has clinched the first place seed in the UPSL Southwest Conference playoffs set to commence in July.
