Sporting AZ FC defeated UPSL Mountain Conference Champion Boise FC Cutthroats by a score of 2-1 in Arvada, Colo. Friday night in the UPSL National Playoff tournament.
Sporting had the better of the chances in the first half, crashing the Boise penalty area with chance after chance from Alejandro Aguilar, Ismael Santana, and David Alton.
Boise FC would test the Sporting backline and veteran goalkeeper Andrew Weber with some well-placed counterattacks, but the first frame ended 0-0.
Just three minutes into the second half, Sporting winger Danny Arrubla showed great individual skill to shake multiple defenders in the box, before unfurling a splendid, looping shot to the far corner of Boise’s net for a 1-0 lead.
The advantage would be doubled in the 75th minute when Aguilar converted a penalty kick earned by Tony Cascio.
Boise FC pulled one back in the 89th, when Irvin Angulo beat Weber to his near post at close range.
On Saturday, August 11, Sporting AZ FC will face the winner of the quarterfinal between FC Boulder and Santa Ana Winds FC.
