Sporting AZ FC has been approved for entry to the open qualifying rounds of the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, U.S. Soccer announced today.
Amateur teams hoping to gain entry to the tournament proper must qualify through league competition in the case of NPSL and PDL members, or through regionalized open qualifying. Sporting qualified for the 2018 tournament by advancing through the open rounds, defeating Inter Empireworks and Galati FC. This year, Sporting is the only club from Arizona to enter the open qualification process.
In the 2018 tournament proper, Sporting defeated local foes FC Arizona (NPSL) and Phoenix Rising FC (USL), before eventually being eliminated by Fresno FC (USL) in extra time.
The first round of qualifying will take place over the weekend of September 22-23. U.S. Soccer will announce Sporting's opponent later this month.
