Turks and Caicos MNT assistant joins club ahead of 2019 season

Sporting AZ FC announced today the hiring of Lance Thompson as Head Coach.

A veteran of 25 years of coaching at the youth, college and international level, Thompson currently is the Assistant Coach for the Turks and Caicos Men's National Team and Executive Director for the AZ Nomads soccer club.

Sporting AZ FC General Manager Tim Marchisotto said, "We are very lucky again to have a high-caliber coach like Lance. He has a long and successful record at the collegiate level, and now international experience. His network and access to players is impressive."

Thompson came to Phoenix in 2016 to become Director of Coaching with Arizona Hammers and Director of Club Soccer at Grand Canyon University, where he guided the 'Lopes to their first Regional Championship appearance in the 2018 season. His head coaching resume includes successful stops at Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State San Bernardino and most recently University of Hawaii-Hilo.

Thompson has had an immediate impact in Arizona soccer with the Nomads, gaining him the Head Coach position for Chandler's Hamilton High School boys’ squad, who are poised for a state championship run.

Tom Hurdle remains as Associate Head Coach coming off of his own incredibly successful 2018. He helped guide Sporting AZ FC to the 3rd round of the 2018 US Open Cup and the UPSL National Championship game. He also led Team USA in the 6v6 World Cup in Portugal to an incredible quarter-final berth, heartbreakingly falling to Germany in penalties. Hurdle recently won the ODP Championship with his AZ U14 girls.

Marchisotto said "It's so good to have Tommy continuing with the club. He's the heartbeat of this franchise. He's a talented coach that we are going to have to enjoy the time he's here because he's a rising star.” Marchisotto added, "I would like to thank Aidan Davison for all he's done for the club, and a magical 2018. He will continue to consult with me on Sporting AZ FC.”
